Suitability for Activities
of this model of Rodby Treadmill
Estimated suitability of skate treadmill for practitioners of activity regarding the length and width of the treadmill belt. Suitability is graded from Optimal via Very good to Good but not optimal. If the treadmill is to be used for several sports activities, the least common denominator should, if possible, be applied in terms of the length and width of the treadmill. The estimated suitability pertain for practitioners of at least experienced level up to elite level. This is for your benefit in selecting the size of the treadmill, based on experience from treadmill installations made and feedback from users.
Endurance, VO2 max, lactate threshold etc.
Optimal for testing. RL4500E can be used in test labs and sports centers for physiological testing and evaluation for a variety of activities and in many countries. The treadmill size is optimal for tests with the different techniques of roller skiing, with running and good also for bicycling, wheelchair, inline skating and pair roller skiing. Good but possibly not optimal choice: for sprinting and pair bicycling where we would recommend a longer Rodby treadmill.
Roller skiing skate style on roller skis
Optimal combination of skate treadmill and activity. The RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm is an excellent choice for practice with roller skis in the skate technique. The benefits of practicing on a treadmill are several. Technical practice with follow-up is important for a practitioner who wants to become skilled in the skating technique. The possibility to design your own tracks or to practice on one of the different "gears" in skating during a whole session or at a certain angle is practically impossible to achieve in outdoor practice. With the treadmill, it is simple, time-saving and efficient.
Biathlon skate skiing technique on roller skis
Optimal combination of skate treadmill and activity. The RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm is excellent for biathlon (which only uses skate technique). Biathlon differs from regular skate skiing in that it is a combination sport where the ability to perform in terms of shooting is greatly affected by the degree to which the rider's condition allows the necessary heart rate reduction on the shooting range and to be able to maintain a competitive speed in the tracks. The treadmill's pulse control is an important instrument for optimizing both fleet and energy-efficient skating. But also to practice at skating at maximum ability for the last sprint lap before the finish line.
Classic skiing double-poling technique on roller skis
Optimal combination of skate treadmill and activity. The RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm is excellent for roller skis double-poling practice. Double poling has de facto become a distinct discipline with growing popularity in the Ski Classics international long-distance cross-country skiing cup competition where the elite uses double-poling exclusively. In cross-country skiing, being able to pole with the right technique in different uphill angles, is a critical skill of today. Torso positioning with upright body posture and the right balance when the center of gravity is pushed forward and up with stretched legs and raised heels, and then transmitting the force from the body weight and core muscles down through the poles. This technique is difficult to master and the only way to reach perfection is through practice and practice again. The treadmill provides unique opportunities to practice the various elements of double-poling. A safety belt can provide that extra security for daring to approach balance points that may feel unsafe without a safety belt. To become really good at double-poling, time and effort practicing both on flats and different uphill angles is usually required. On the treadmill, safe movement patterns are created that the practitioner can use and switch between completely naturally when skiing on a track. For skiers who aim for long distance cross-country skiing, where the best nowadays double-pole all the way, a treadmill can be very valuable.
Classic skiing diagonal technique on roller skis
Optimal combination of skate treadmill and activity. RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm is excellent to practice with roller skis in the diagonal technique of the classic cross-country style. Classic cross-country on cross-country skis (practiced on roller skis) has changed somewhat towards using double-poling to a much greater extent on the flat and in moderate inclines (see section above). The diagonal style technique (or gear) is used uphill from moderately to steep inclines. The treadmill with its elevation capabilities: 0-14° (0-25%) is very suitable to practicing and fine-tuning all styles (gears) of the classic cross-country technique. Even though the classic diagonal style is as old as skiing is in itself, it is still developing. The newest trend in steep uphill skiing is towards using swifter movement pattern with a running technique where the foot moves in a circle (as for a cyclist) and the ski does not slide at all each step. What makes this running technique so effective is probably that the leg muscles work with larger and less static movements and with a more light and even load. A larger lighter movement means muscles to a lesser degree exposed to static muscle tension. Exercising with regular running shoes and ski poles is perhaps the best way to simulate this running technique.
Running, racewalking and walking
Optimal combination of skate treadmill and activity. The RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm is excellent for running training. Rodby treadmills are equipped with special alloy aluminum sheets as the gliding base for the belt so that the feeling for the runner will mimic outdoor running on hard gravel roads. The treadmill's width and large running surface make it easy to perform running analyzes to correct and improve running technique. The treadmill control system is equipped with heart rate control and works very effectively for interval training. Quick distance, intervals, threshold and lactic acid training, VO2 max running are some of the many benefits a treadmill brings.
All kinds like road, mountain or track bicycling
Very good combination of skate treadmill and activity. A treadmill provides a much more realistic training environment, partly because the bike's vertical angle to the ground is not static as it is on ordinary training bikes that stand on a floor. This advantage is perhaps most prominent in the uphill and sprint when the cyclist rocks from side to side. And partly, the cyclist can train with his own bike and lessen the risk of impinging incorrect movement patterns on a floor-placed training bike. Rodby skate treadmills can be equipped with the optional Rodby Max Top speed upgrade which allows the treadmill to roll up to 70 km/h. The Skate Treadmill RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm works very well for bicycling but we recommend a belt length of 4500 mm or longer. For safety and to provide margin forward and backward when increasing speed, uphill training and braking.
Wheelchair and Frame runner racing
Very good combination of skate treadmill and activity. The RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm works for practice with a wheelchair or framerunner. There are special options for this category of practitioners that Rodby can equip the treadmill with. For optimal suitability between the treadmill and the activity, we recommend a longer treadmill for safety and to provide margin forward and backward.
Inline racing and speed skating on wheels
Very good combination of skate treadmill and activity. The RL4500E in its three different widths 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm works very well for training on inline skates. Inline skiing takes place at fairly high speeds, so if completely optimal conditions are sought, a longer treadmill is recommended for safety and to provide a margin forwards and backwards.
Two practitioners simultaneously on roller skis or inlines
Very good combination of skate treadmill and activity. Pair training on skate treadmills requires experienced practitioners and good teamwork skills. Both the length of the treadmill but also its width affect the degree to which safe and good training can be performed. The RL4500E is long enough but we would recommend a 3000 mm wide treadmill.
Sprint training on bicycle, roller skis or inlines
Very good combination of skate treadmill and activity. If the training includes fast speed changes, sprints and sprints, the RL4500E is a very good choice. This is both for the rider's safety and to provide a realistic riding experience. This is especially true if the practitioner is a cyclist. A longer treadmill provides a more compliant experience without the practitioner having to worry about the belt edge.
Two bicyclists simultaneously using the treadmill
Very good combination of skate treadmill and activity. Riding a bicycle on a treadmill requires experienced practitioners and a good ability to work together. Both the length of the treadmill but also its width affect the degree to which safe and good training can be performed. RL4500E is long enough but we recommend a treadmill with 3000 mm width.
Belt Widths RL4500E
Rodby RL4500E is available with three belt widths: RL4500E x 2500, RL4500E x 2700 or RL4500E x 3000 mm. Below are the sizes of the belt shown next to each other and approximately how big a lying practitioner is in relation to the belts. Click to zoom images.
Rodby Control System
Control System 2.0
Rodby's large skate treadmills can be installed either in an installation pit or standing on the floor in the room.
Treadmill installed in pit
Rodby can adapt the treadmill to the location and circumstances. All skate treadmills can be installed in an installation pit so that the treadmill's belt is only about 15 cm above floor level. Installation in a pit requires a room that is tailored for the skateband.
Treadmill installed on the floor
The installation that requires the least intervention or adaptation of the room is to place the treadmill on the floor. Then the treadmill's belt will be approximately 75 cm above floor level when the belt is in the start position and not elevated.
Professional Skate Treadmills
The large skating treadmills are used in many countries for exercise with rollerskis both classic and skate style, bicycling, running and wheel-chairing. Rodby offers full adaptability to locale and purpose.
